NFI Crab Council Announces New Member, Fisherman's Choice

Washington, DC – The National Fisheries Institute’s Crab Council announces Fisherman’s Choice as its latest member. The Netherlands-based seafood importer and distributor provides a suite of selectively sourced products to customers in Europe, Canada, the Middle East and Africa.

Operating for over twenty-five years, Fisherman’s Choice supplies retailers and food service companies with several recognized brands including Asian Choice and Super Choice. With quality control personnel in Southeast Asia, Fisherman’s Choice ensures topflight product from trusted processor partners.

“Fisherman’s Choice maintains that a product’s harvest is just as important as its taste,” said Quality Manager Jimei Tai. “As the foremost crab sustainability effort, the NFI Crab Council’s focus on responsible sourcing embodies the commitment Fisherman’s Choice already embraces as a company.”

Fisherman’s Choice joins the Crab Council as its 26th full member and first European member. The Crab Council is an industry-led sustainability effort whose membership includes U.S. and international crab importing companies. The Crab Council assesses its members on every pound of blue swimming crab imported to support fishery improvement projects in Southeast Asia.

Welcoming Fisherman’s Choice to the Crab Council, council Chairman Brendan Sweeny views the Dutch seafood company’s addition as a pivot moment for the crab sustainability movement.

“Seafood is a global community,” said Crab Council Chairman Brendan Sweeny. “But sustainability happens fishery by fishery. Fisherman’s Choice’s addition to the Crab Council positions our work as a multi-country effort. The broader support the council receives the more targeted and successful our work.”

The NFI Crab Council was founded in 2009 and funds blue swimming crab sustainability projects through contributions from participating companies and has received grants from the World Bank and the Walton Family Foundation.
