Pullet eggs, from young chickens that have just started to lay, are smaller than regular hen’s eggs. FreshDirect is purchasing pullet eggs (shown in carton) from Alderfer Family Farm in Pennsylvania and will sell them through its private brand, Just FreshDirect, from Friday through the end of the month, or until supplies last. They are also called farmer’s eggs. “When we visited the farm, we saw them pulling out some eggs and we were told it was because they were small and nobody wanted them,” said David McInerney, a founder of FreshDirect. “But the farmers like them because they tasted better, and we thought our customers would want something new.” They will be available again in late May or early June, and in September. They are organic, with 50 calories each, compared with 70 calories in a regular large egg: Farmer’s Eggs are $3.69 a dozen from freshdirect.com.
