Yanni Papanikolaou, dressed in a crisp new black and blue chef’s uniform, sidles around his similarly-garbed father, who is manning the grills, past a tidy and counter-long row of Greek desserts on his way to the register. It’s a busy midday service for the bustling lunchtime favorite, but he’s eager to share a recent development.
Since opening 15 months ago, the family’s eatery, The Greeks Authentic Mediterranean Deli, has found an enthusiastic following in Wilmington. They’ve expanded the range of food, added outdoor patio seating, and just this week announced a partnership with local grocer Carolina Farmin’ that will find a selection of their branded products on the shelves in coming weeks.
They’re launching with four products; tzatziki dip, hummus, salad dressing and a Kalamata olive oil. It’s a natural arrangement for the restaurant, which also sources many of their North Carolina-grown and raised produce items through the store. Taking a quick glance over the labels, Yanni comes to a realization and cracks a joke, “You get to see part of the tzatziki and hummus recipe, maybe I didn’t think this through.”
