Health & Nutrition Experts Lead Chorus Of Praise For Chilean Blueberries All Year-Round

SONOMA, CA – As North Americans are thinking about healthier eating in the New Year, two top experts in health and nutrition are taking to the airwaves in support of fresh blueberries, announces the Chilean Blueberry Committee (CBC).

Ellie Krieger, RD, the nationally acclaimed registered dietician and host of Food Network’s Healthy Appetite, and Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS, (aka "The Rogue Nutritionist"), well-known expert on weight loss, nutrition and health – will be spreading the word that blueberries are among the most nutritious fruits and can play a key role in achieving consumers’ nutrition goals. At only 42 calories per 1/2 cup serving, blueberries are ideal as a smart snack option in lieu of more fattening snacks. Not only that, these Little Blue Dynamos* are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, fiber, potassium and other essential nutrients.

Considered by many leading nutrition experts as a “superfood,” blueberries are purported to improve brain function, prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia (according to independent university studies), lower the risk of heart disease and cancer. Scientific evidence also suggests that blueberries may even be beneficial to the skin.

During their appearances, Ellie Krieger and Dr. Jonny Bowden will remind consumers about the many benefits of summer-fresh blueberries and will show audiences how easily they integrate into breakfast, lunch, snack and dessert to give a nutritional boost to every meal.

These efforts are timed to correspond with the peak of the blueberry harvest in Chile. During the winter months in North America, fresh summer-time fruit is readily available from Chile. With fresh blueberries on their way to U.S. and Canadian markets, CBC’s efforts will directly engage consumers in print, television, online and in stores.

Appearances by Ellie Krieger, RD, and Dr. Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS, are part of the Chilean Blueberry Committee’s multi-faceted campaign, which seeks to educate consumers on the health benefits of fresh blueberries. The CBC has added new menu creations to its stock of nutritious blueberry recipes, developed literature highlighting pertinent nutrition research and is supporting the experts’ national television tours.

The Chilean Blueberry Committee, an organization linked to the Chilean Exporters Association, A.G. (ASOEX), aims to increase the long-term competitiveness of the Chilean fresh blueberry industry and to continue to develop international markets for fresh blueberries from Chile. Chile is currently the second largest producer of cultivated blueberries worldwide and also the leading grower in the Southern Hemisphere, where the fruit is available during the winter season, when it is not being harvested in the Northern Hemisphere.
