BOULDER – The University of Colorado athletic department and WhiteWave Foods have teamed up to present the WhiteWave Homegrown Hero, honoring a CU student athlete, coach or staff member who grew up in Colorado and has excelled for the Buffaloes. WhiteWave has strong Colorado roots with two of its brands, Silk® and Horizon®, starting in Colorado and creating the categories they now lead.
A new WhiteWave Homegrown Hero will be selected each week from September through March and their stories of growing up in the Centennial State and their impact on the Buffaloes will be shared on CUBuffs.com and CU’s social media outlets. Select winners will be featured on the Buffalo Stampede Coaches television show, mentioned in the radio broadcasts for football and basketball games and mentioned in the stadium on game day on CU’s Buff Vision video boards.
WhiteWave, which also produces the International Delight® brand, was on board from the beginning in sponsoring CU’s Ralphie's Green Stampede, a zero waste and carbonIreducing effort in Folsom Field and at the Coors Events Center. Folsom Field continues to be the only pro or major collegiate stadium to collect all materials in recycling or compost containers and eliminate trash cans and transform its collection systems into a zero waste process.
"WhiteWave Foods has been a leadership partner with the Buffs since inspiring us to implement Ralphie's Green Stampede four years ago," CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn said. "We salute their contagious commitment to meaningful sustainability initiatives and their collaborative efforts to create nationally recognized green programs. WhiteWave further represents the core values and passion that is demonstrated in our joint desire to recognize CU's exemplary coaches and student athletes who have made an impact in their home state."
CU has been successful in recycling or composting more than 80 percent of the waste generated over the past two seasons and continues to strive toward zero waste. For example, the food service utensils are now compostable. WhiteWave will also be more visible on game days sponsoring a new Kids Zone in the tailgating areas at football games and being a part of CU’s highly successful Healthy Kids Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
"We are happy to extend our partnership with CU beyond the Green Stampede to recognize Colorado natives from CU who are successful on and off the playing field," said Doug Behrens, senior vice president, Sales, and Chief Customer Officer for WhiteWave Foods. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with CU as we share similar values around responsible business practices."
