Big Papa Pickle Eating Contest At Milwaukee's Germanfest

Pickles have been added to the traditional menu of beer and brats at this year's Germanfest in Milwaukee, WI, which is North America's Largest German Festival. A Big Papa Pickle eating contest will be a part of the fest's Eat-A-Thon at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 30th at the Rock Amerika stage.

Germanfest will be held on the Summerfest Grounds on the lakefront in Milwaukee from Thursday, July 28th to Sunday, July 31st. Germanfest sponsor, Van Holten's Pickle-in-a-Pouch, is contributing a large supply of its Big Papa Dill Pickles as part of the festival's four night Eat-A-Thon. A total of 25 contestants will compete over four successive nights with the winner receiving free airfare.

On Saturday the 30th contestants will have 5 minutes to open and consume as many Big Papa pickles as they can. Since each pickle is individually wrapped it will be a challenge of manual dexterity as well as stomach capacity. Competitors will not be obligated to consume the pickle juice, but it will not be deterred.

"Pickles are fat free and have almost zero calories," said Van Holten's president Steve Byrnes, "so we think this may be the lowest fat, lowest calorie eating contest ever held."

Fest attendants not participating in the Eat-A-Thon will be able to buy Pickle-In-A-Pouch at multiple locations on the grounds of the festival. Van Holten's pickles are grown and packaged in Wisconsin.

Van Holten's was founded in 1898 and is the number one producer of individually packaged pickles in the world. Pickle-in-a-Pouch is distributed in all 50 states and can be found at convenience stores, grocery stores, and many other retail outlets.
