Curwood Bread Package Honored With 2011 Packaging Association Of Canada Awards

Oshkosh, Wisconsin – Curwood today that its Canada Bread Dempster’s Oven Fresh par-baked bread package and Olivieri Ovenable Cannelloni package earned gold and silver awards respectively at the Packaging Association of Canada Packaging Competition. The Packaging Competition is part of the PAC’s 2011 Leadership Awards.

The Canada Bread Dempster’s Oven Fresh par-baked bread is a unique high-barrier shelf-stable package that caters to the busy consumer who wants fresh baked bread, but lacks the time or ability to make the product at home from scratch. With no need to thaw frozen bread or make it from scratch, the consumer can simply unwrap the par-baked product, bake it, and have fresh baked bread in eight minutes.

An integral part of the award is Curwood’s high-barrier packaging offering a 75 day shelf life, resulting in fresher product and minimal food waste when compared with most fresh baked bread from the bakery. The two-loaf package easily separates with provided perforations allowing for later use of the second loaf. The high-barrier shelf-stable package allows Canada Bread, owned by Maple Leaf Foods, to distribute nationally as well as cross-market display in un-refrigerated areas of the store through the use of eye-catching eight color flexographic process printed graphics.
Curwood also earned a silver award for the Olivieri Ovenable Cannelloni package top film, a high-strength peelable coextruded lamination applied to a CPET tray. This product requires perfect seal integrity throughout its shelf life, achieved in a high-barrier peelable film to maintain low oxygen content. The Olivieri brand is also owned by Maple Leaf Foods.

The awards were accepted by Gordon Sarx, Curwood Sales Representative, and Jean Francois Guillerez, Technical Packaging Manager of Maple Leaf Foods – Canada Bread, at the PAC’s annual awards gala on June 21, 2011. The awards event is well attended by many packaging industry professionals and their customers.

“On behalf of Curwood it was an honor to receive both a Gold and Silver PAC Leadership Award for our work with the Canada Bread and Olivieri projects,” Sarx stated. “Maple Leaf Foods understands the power of Curwood’s technical expertise and our ability to pull projects through to completion.” Both the Canada Bread and Olivieri projects were a process of continuous improvement over many development steps as well as understanding the customer’s needs.
