Smartphone Scan Codes A Strong Tool For San Joaquin Valley Ag

QR codes — those little black-and-white, bar-code-like labels that can be scanned by smartphones — are changing the way food grown in the Valley is marketed.

They're tearing down a barrier growers and packers of fruit and other crops have struggled with for years: how to get information to the consumer when your product doesn't have a box or plastic wrapping with room for text or photos.

Reedley-based Summeripe Worldwide Inc, an alliance of fruit packers, growers and shippers, is using QR codes on signs displayed with their peaches, plums and nectarines. Customers who scan the codes are taken to a site with recipes for peach bread pudding and photos of fruit on the trees.
