Midwest Dairy and our dairy farm families have been committed to child health and nutrition for more than 95 years. While we applaud the district’s commitment to improve child nutrition, we strongly disagree with their decision to remove chocolate milk from their school lunch program. We believe there are better ways to trim calories and sugars from school menus than removing nutrient-rich foods like chocolate milk. The school district’s decision is surprising since Minneapolis schools had already switched to a chocolate milk product that is lower in fat, and contains less added sugar and fewer calories. And, we know chocolate milk is the most popular milk choice in schools, and kids drink less milk and get fewer nutrients if it’s taken away. Parents can get the facts about the nutritional benefits of chocolate milk at www.midwestdairy.com.
