The Fresh Market Inc., a North Carolina-based chain of smaller-sized supermarkets specializing in fresh produce and other perishables, will open its first New Jersey store in Montvale June 15.
The company, which has tripled its store count since 2000, and went public last year, is expanding rapidly, with several new stores planned in suburban New York and Connecticut. The chain targets upscale customers, and says it models its stores after European markets, where customers can touch, smell, sample, and otherwise "experience" the food.
The Montvale store, located in a strip center at 32 Chestnut Ridge Road, will occupy about 19,000 square feet and will feature a bakery that produces fresh-baked bread and pies, as well as departments featuring meats, seafood, prepared entrees and organic produce.
