The Jersey Fresh label, and the high standards that come with it, now can be used to promote baked goods and other items prepared with homegrown fruit and vegetables. Gov. Chris Christie signed the measure, pushed by Sen. Jeff Van Drew and Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam, on Wednesday.
The measure will allow businesses, such as Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland, to advertise as "Made With Jersey Fresh" to ensure customers know they use the finest local fruits and vegetables in their tasty baked pies, cakes and cookies.
Using local produce for ingredients helps ensure their baked goods are fresh. Buying local stimulates the economy, keeps people working and directly supports area farmers.
As far as we're concerned, approving this bill was a no-brainer because it would benefit local businesses, as well as customers.
