United Natural Foods, Inc. and Square Roots, the technology leader in indoor farming, today announced a new agreement to co-locate Square Roots’ indoor farms on-site at select UNFI distribution centers. The first Square Roots farm, approximately 20,000 square feet in size, is planned for UNFI’s Prescott, Wis. facility and is scheduled to open in 2023.

A heavy crop of Satsuma mandarins from the Sweet Valley Citrus Region are maturing and will begin shipping about two weeks ahead of the 2021 season. “The 2022 crop looks great,” exclaimed Kim Jones, current president of Cold Hardy Citrus Association. “Color break has been early, brix is already testing as high as 11 which indicates exceptionally sweet, flavorful fruit, and we predict the volume to be higher than anticipated.”

Freshfel Europe Calls On Global Actors to Introduce International Standards to Facilitate Trade

On Tuesday, 8th November, during a meeting in Geneva of a thematic session of the WTO SPS Committee, Freshfel Europe called for the meticulous implementation of the WTO SPS and Trade Facilitation agreements principles.  Freshfel Europe questioned the numerous ongoing SPS barriers faced by European fresh produce exports for market access due to difficulties and burdens in negotiating the opening of new markets.  Too many third countries ignore the basics of the WTO SPS and TFA rules and set out unrealistic requirements, which, combined with a lack of international IPPC standards, prevents trade development.
